Life is a Celebration!

The Winter Ball at Victory Centre of River Oaks is a posh annual affair much-loved by residents and staff. Team members serve as party planners and go the extra mile to create a memorable event each year. They manage all of the details—from the handmade decorations and table centerpieces, to the music playlist and specially prepared drinks and appetizers. To look and feel their best, many residents get their hair and nails done with the help of staff the day before the event. They attend the Ball looking fabulous and ready to mix, mingle and dance!

An annual trip to the Lyric Opera of Chicago is another tradition that has residents getting glamorous. They’ve previewed shows such as “Madama Butterfly,” “don Quixote” and “Lucia di Lammermoor” thanks to a Lyric community engagement program that invites Chicago area seniors to attend a dress rehearsal for free. Longtime opera aficionados and first timers alike enjoy the shows.

The holidays are a time to celebrate, and one of the most anticipated parties of the year here is Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewicz Qualkinbush’s Christmas dinner. The Mayor caters a hearty spread of delicious food and shares the meal with residents and staff. It’s the Mayor’s special way of reminding Victory Centre seniors that they are cherished and vital members of the Calumet City community.

Good Times Day-to-Day

Each day at Victory Centre provides a chance to be fit, social and engaged.

Victory Centre residents exercise their brains in computer classes and lifelong learning programs while others stretch their muscles in Chair Chi or Yoga. Residents get together at monthly socials and at the Ladies Brunch or the Men’s Mingle groups. They explore their creative sides in drumming circles, ArtPath classes and scrapbooking groups. Gardeners use their green thumbs to help grow fresh herbs and vegetables in the Victory Garden, which are then used as featured ingredients in cooking demonstrations. Storytellers share their life tales with the Story Trails group and armchair travelers satisfy their wanderlust in the World Tour virtual travel program. A wide range of programs at River Oaks satisfy a wide variety of interests!

Meaningful Pastimes

More than keeping busy, Victory Centre residents spend purpose-filled days doing what fulfills them.

Overcoming health challenges, resident Marge pursued her passion for yoga by becoming a certified instructor and now leads classes at the community. Her determination has inspired many fellow residents to practice yoga and live healthier.

River Oaks residents also come together to help make the world a better place. They support The American Cancer Society’s annual Daffodil Days fundraiser and make regular donations to the American Red Cross and Goodwill. Leaving a legacy for future generations, some residents created a “time capsule” chest in honor of the community’s tenth anniversary. They packed a wooden chest with present-day memorabilia and stored the historic treasure in the attic for future generations to find and enjoy.

Out and About

River Oaks residents enjoy regular trips to local destinations and have visited the Civic Opera House, Jelly Belly factory, Shedd Aquarium, Chicago Botanic Garden, and Gary South Shore Railcats baseball team. They also enjoy an open invitation to participate in the annual opportunity to go horseback riding and camping on a day or overnight trip with Camp! VIVA.
