An “Attitude of Gratitude” Can Improve Your Life

By: Karen Leimberer, RN, BSN, MA, CMC, Director of Life Enrichment, Pathway Senior Living

Those who volunteer their time and talents to help others are getting benefits in return. Studies show that this is true, especially for those who are age 65 and older.

Research has shown that the positive effects on mental and physical health are due to the personal sense of accomplishment that one gains from his or her volunteer activities. Volunteering also provides a sense of purpose in older adults, which is particularly good for those who experienced the loss of major role identities such as wage-earners and parents. Participation in community service can also lead to a longer and more fulfilled life.

Whether sharing existing talents or learning new skills, volunteers keep mentally sharp. Plus volunteering is a great way to stay socially connected and make friends. In order to realize these and other benefits, studies indicate that a person must commit at least 1 to 2 hours each week to volunteer activities, the more the better.

Caring and Sharing

Pathway seniors, thankful for quality, affordable Supportive Living, are paying it forward through a novel Caring and Sharing program. Residents who participate in the many volunteer opportunities have an “attitude of gratitude” that spreads like ripples in a pond, benefitting all who are touched.

It starts with each community adopting a cause or causes that are meaningful to its residents.

Many long-term relationships have been formed between Pathway communities and their charitable partners, which include Ronald McDonald House, Mooseheart, Feed My Starving Children, New Life for Old Bags, the American Cancer Society and Toys for Tots. Residents donate their time, energy and creativity. They organize food drives, Relay for Life events, crochet blankets, make meals, bead vases and even turn used plastic bags into “plarn” for sleeping mats for the homeless.

These sage seniors will tell you that, from their experience, the benefits of volunteering are real, and they are grateful for all they are able to give and get back in return!
